Length of Course:  1 semester

Course Introduction:  Study Skills is a required class for high school graduation. Upon completion of this course, the student will understand proper goal setting and time management skills, distinguish between differences in note-taking and note-making, and identify proper study techniques necessary for classroom success. In addition, the student will also develop listening skills to aid in learning. They will also become familiar with technology techniques that will aid in his or her learning. Finally, the student will be exposed to daily personal development exercises. These exercises will focus on individual effort, attitude, motivation, and character.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Use the SMART goal setting technique to meet academic goals, while ensuring proper time management and prioritizing skills.
  • 2. Distinguish between listening and hearing, while developing listening strategies necessary for accurate translation and retention of information.
  • 3. Identify the difference between note-making and note-taking, while identifying which note-taking/making strategy is best for the situation and/or individual student.
  • 4. Use technology to further aid in the gathering and evaluation of information on the internet that may be helpful for the student in the classroom.
  • 5. Evaluate various test taking strategies that include techniques for test preparation/taking, dealing with stress, and tips for answer true/false, multiple choice, matching, short answer, and essay question test forms.
  • 6. Develop personal study techniques that including finding the proper environment, asking questions, proper mindset, and reviewing.
  • 7. Understand and develop personal behaviors that focus on attitude, effort, motivation, and character.
